lotus eater

Pleasure-drunk drifter

A lotus eater is someone who lives in dreamy, indolent contentment, indifferent to practical concerns.

The term comes from Homer's *Odyssey*, where Odysseus's men eat lotus fruit and lose all desire to return home.

The phrase now describes anyone who drifts through life in pleasurable idleness: He spent his twenties as a lotus eater, traveling and avoiding responsibility.
