lofter
High-trajectory club
A lofter is a golf club designed to hit the ball high into the air, with a steeply angled face.
The term is old-fashioned; modern golfers typically refer to specific clubs by number or name (wedge, nine-iron) rather than the generic lofter.
He reached for a lofter to clear the bunker.
