laurel leaf

Apollo's sacred greenery

A laurel leaf comes from the bay laurel tree, an aromatic evergreen native to the Mediterranean.

In cooking, these leaves—usually called bay leaves—add earthy, slightly bitter flavor to soups, stews, and braises.

Laurel leaves also carry classical associations with victory and honor, from the wreaths worn by ancient Greek and Roman champions.
