language delay
Late verbal development
Language delay is a condition in which a child's speech and language skills develop more slowly than typical for their age.
A child with language delay may have a limited vocabulary, struggle to form sentences, or begin speaking later than peers.
The delay may resolve with time or intervention, or it may indicate a developmental disorder: The pediatrician recommended speech therapy for his language delay.
