knock back

Gulp it down

To knock back is to drink quickly, usually in a single gulp: He knocked back three whiskeys before dinner.

The phrase also means to cost someone money, especially a surprising amount: That repair knocked me back five hundred dollars.

In British usage, to knock someone back is to reject or rebuff them.
