knight move
Leaping over pieces
A knight move is a chess maneuver where the knight travels in an L-shape—two squares in one direction and one square perpendicular, or vice versa.
Unlike other pieces, the knight jumps over intervening pieces.
Figuratively, a knight move describes any indirect or unexpected approach to a problem: His knight move around the bureaucracy got the permit approved in days.
