jukebox musical

Hits-based theater

A jukebox musical is a stage show or film built around pre-existing popular songs rather than an original score.

The songs—usually by a single artist or band—are woven into a narrative: Mamma Mia! uses ABBA hits, Jersey Boys chronicles the Four Seasons.

The term references the jukebox, where you select songs already recorded rather than request new ones.
