judicial opinion
Judge's written decision
A judicial opinion is a court's formal written explanation of its decision in a case, setting out the legal reasoning and conclusions.
Opinions interpret law, establish precedent, and guide future cases.
A majority opinion represents the court's binding judgment; concurring opinions agree with the outcome but differ in reasoning; dissenting opinions disagree with the decision entirely.
The Supreme Court's opinion in Brown v. Board reshaped American education.
