Lossy image distortion
JPEG artifacts are visual distortions that appear in images compressed using the JPEG format.
The compression works by discarding information the algorithm considers less noticeable, but aggressive compression produces telltale flaws: blocky patterns, color banding, and blurry halos around sharp edges.
Images repeatedly saved as JPEGs accumulate worse artifacts with each generation.
The term extends to any degraded, overshared image: This meme has been reposted so many times it's pure jpeg artifacts.
