internal conflicts

Battles within oneself

Internal conflicts are struggles within a person's mind—competing desires, values, or impulses that pull in different directions: She faced internal conflicts about leaving her hometown.

The term also describes strife within a group or organization rather than with outside forces: The party's internal conflicts weakened its election chances.

In literary analysis, internal conflict refers to a character's psychological struggle, contrasted with external conflict against other characters or circumstances.
