interim coach
Stand-in team head
An interim coach is a temporary head coach appointed to lead a team while a permanent replacement is sought.
The role typically follows a firing, resignation, or other sudden departure: The defensive coordinator was named interim coach for the rest of the season.
Interim coaches sometimes earn the permanent job through strong performance, but just as often serve only until the organization completes its search.
