intentional foul
Calculated rules breach
In sports, an intentional foul is a deliberate violation of the rules, usually committed for strategic advantage.
In basketball, a team losing near the end of a game may intentionally foul to stop the clock and hope for missed free throws: They had no choice but to start putting him on the line with intentional fouls.
The term extends to any calculated rule-breaking where the penalty seems worth the tactical benefit.
