injured reserve
Out with injury
Injured reserve is a designation in professional sports, especially American football, for players too injured to compete but kept on the team roster.
A player placed on injured reserve cannot play for a specified period, freeing a roster spot while the team retains their rights.
The term extends figuratively to anyone sidelined by injury or illness: I've been on injured reserve since I threw out my back.
