inheritance scam

Fake bequest scheme

An inheritance scam is a fraud where victims receive messages claiming they're entitled to a large inheritance from a distant relative or wealthy stranger—usually requiring upfront fees or personal information to release the funds.

The inheritance doesn't exist: My grandmother almost fell for an inheritance scam promising millions from a Nigerian prince.

A classic advance-fee fraud.
