information gap

What someone lacks

An information gap is a disparity in knowledge between parties—what one person or group knows that another doesn't.

The term appears in economics, journalism, and education.

In language teaching, an information gap activity pairs students who must exchange details to complete a task: One student has the bus schedule, the other has the map.

Information gaps can be strategic (withholding data for advantage) or structural (unequal access to resources).
