indie movie
Low-budget cinema
An indie movie is a film produced outside the major studio system, typically with a smaller budget and more creative freedom.
The term comes from "independent." Indie movies often feature unconventional narratives, unknown actors, or artistic experimentation: We watched some indie movies at the festival.
The label has become a loose aesthetic category—some films distributed by major studios still feel "indie" in sensibility.
