in the red
Operating at loss
In the red means operating at a financial loss or in debt.
The phrase comes from the bookkeeping practice of recording losses in red ink, as opposed to profits in black.
A business that's in the red is losing money: The company has been in the red for three consecutive quarters.
Personal finances work the same way: I'm still in the red after that car repair.
