immigration hold
Custody pending deportation
An immigration hold is a request by federal immigration authorities to detain someone in local or state custody beyond their scheduled release.
When someone in jail completes their sentence or posts bail, an immigration hold asks the facility to keep them—typically for 48 hours—so immigration agents can take custody.
He was ready for release, but there was an immigration hold on him.
Also called an ICE detainer.
