iconize

Turn into symbol

To iconize something is to make it into an icon—to reduce a complex thing to a simple, recognizable symbol.

In computing, iconize means to minimize a window into a small graphic on the desktop or taskbar: I iconized the browser to clear my screen.

More broadly, to iconize a person or thing is to elevate it to iconic status, though this sense is rarer than the verb iconify.
