decanonize

Strip holy status

To decanonize is to remove something or someone from canonical status—whether a saint stripped of official recognition by the church, a literary work dropped from the standard curriculum, or a storyline declared no longer part of an official fictional universe.

The opposite of canonize.

The franchise decanonized the sequel trilogy.

Scholars have argued for decanonizing certain authors.
