hunting instincts

Innate predator drives

Hunting instincts are the innate drives and behaviors that predispose an animal to pursue, capture, and kill prey.

In domestic animals, especially dogs and cats, these instincts persist even when food is provided: The terrier's hunting instincts kicked in when it spotted the squirrel.

Applied to humans, the phrase usually describes competitive drive or the urge to pursue goals aggressively.
