A hot check is a check written on an account with insufficient funds to cover it, also called a bad check or bounced check.
Writing hot checks knowingly is illegal in most jurisdictions and can result in criminal charges for check fraud.
The term may also refer to checks written on closed accounts or with forged signatures.
