horse soldier

Cavalry unit member

A horse soldier is a member of a cavalry unit—a soldier who fights mounted on horseback or who belongs to a military division historically associated with mounted combat.

The term has an old-fashioned, somewhat romantic quality compared to the more clinical "cavalry" or "mounted infantry." It appears in military history, folk songs, and film titles evoking traditional warfare.

The horse soldiers rode through enemy lines at dawn.
