hindcast
Backward weather prediction
A hindcast is a prediction made about the past—using a model to "predict" events that have already occurred, as a way of testing the model's accuracy.
The term mirrors forecast but looks backward: The climate model's hindcast accurately reproduced twentieth-century temperature patterns.
Common in meteorology, oceanography, and climate science, where researchers validate predictive models against historical data before trusting them to forecast the future.
