highway exits
Where drivers leave
Highway exits are the ramps and interchanges where vehicles leave a highway for local roads or connecting routes.
They're typically numbered sequentially or by mile marker: Take exit 42 toward downtown.
The phrase also refers to the act of leaving: We missed our exit.
Exit signs, speed reductions, and merge lanes mark these transition points from high-speed travel to surface streets.
