hibachis

Small charcoal cookers

Hibachis is the plural of hibachi, a small portable charcoal grill used for cooking outdoors.

The Japanese original was a heating brazier, but in American usage hibachi means the compact grills popular for backyard cookouts and picnics: We brought the hibachis to the beach.

Hibachi-style also describes the theatrical tableside cooking at Japanese steakhouses, though those use flat-top griddles rather than traditional hibachis.
