heat shielding
Barrier against flames
Heat shielding is material or a system designed to protect against extreme temperatures, especially during atmospheric reentry of spacecraft.
The shield absorbs or deflects intense heat that would otherwise destroy the vehicle: The capsule's heat shielding glowed orange as it plunged through the atmosphere.
Heat shielding also appears in industrial applications and automotive design.
