heat-affected zone
Thermally altered region
The heat-affected zone is the area of base metal surrounding a weld that wasn't melted but had its properties altered by the heat of welding.
This zone often becomes harder or more brittle than the surrounding material, making it a common site of cracking or failure: The fracture originated in the heat-affected zone.
