haybox

Straw-lined food keeper

A haybox is an insulated container used to finish cooking food with retained heat.

A pot of food is brought to a boil on a stove, then placed in the box packed with hay or other insulating material, where it continues cooking slowly without additional fuel.

The technique conserves energy and was common before modern slow cookers: Grandmother used a haybox to make stews while she worked in the fields.
