hatchetmen

Mob's dirty workers

Hatchetmen is the plural of hatchet man—someone hired to carry out unpleasant tasks, especially firing employees or attacking opponents.

The term originated with Chinese gang enforcers in 19th-century America who literally wielded hatchets.

Now it's mostly figurative: The CEO sent his hatchetmen to clean house after the merger.

A hatchet man does the dirty work others won't.
