harelips
Congenital mouth fissures
Harelips is the plural of harelip, an old-fashioned and now offensive term for a cleft lip—a congenital split in the upper lip.
The term compares the appearance to a hare's divided upper lip.
Medical and polite usage now favors cleft lip: The surgery corrected the baby's cleft lip.
