hard tack

Sailor's dried bread

Hardtack is a simple, dry cracker or biscuit made from flour, water, and sometimes salt—designed to last indefinitely without spoiling.

It was a staple ration for sailors and soldiers from ancient times through the American Civil War, valued for durability rather than taste.

The stuff is notoriously hard: The hardtack was so stale we had to soak it in coffee just to chew it.
