halfcocked

Acting without thinking

Halfcocked describes something done prematurely or without adequate preparation.

The term comes from firearms—a gun at half-cock has the hammer partially raised but not ready to fire.

To go off half-cocked is to act rashly before being fully prepared: He launched the campaign half-cocked and it failed spectacularly.

A halfcocked plan lacks proper thought or readiness.
