hackney cab

A hackney cab is a licensed taxi available for hire on the street, as distinguished from private-hire vehicles that must be booked in advance.

The term is chiefly British and somewhat formal, appearing in regulations and official contexts: Hackney cabs can be hailed from the curb.

In London, the term often refers specifically to the iconic black cabs.
