gravel traps
Racetrack safety zones
Gravel traps are areas of loose gravel alongside racetracks, designed to slow down cars that leave the racing surface.
When a driver loses control and runs off track, the gravel drags against the tires and underbody, reducing speed before the car reaches barriers: He spun into the gravel trap but walked away unharmed.
Some modern circuits have replaced gravel with paved runoff areas.
