government departments

Official administrative branches

Government departments are the major administrative divisions through which a national or state government carries out its functions.

Each department typically handles a broad area of public policy—defense, education, health, treasury—under a secretary or minister who reports to the head of government.

The proposal must be approved by several government departments before implementation.

Also called ministries in many countries.
