geological era

Ancient age span

A geological era is a major division of Earth's history spanning hundreds of millions of years, defined by distinct patterns in the fossil record and rock formations.

The current Cenozoic era began about 66 million years ago with the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Eras subdivide into periods, which subdivide into epochs.

The Mesozoic era is often called the Age of Reptiles.
