garbage disposal units

Garbage disposal units are devices installed beneath kitchen sinks that grind food waste into particles small enough to pass through plumbing.

Common in American homes, they reduce kitchen trash and prevent drain clogs.

The motor-driven mechanism shreds scraps when cold water runs: Don't put bones in the garbage disposal.

Often shortened to garbage disposal or just disposal.
