frostline
Ground freezing depth
The frostline is the depth to which ground freezes in winter—the boundary between frozen and unfrozen soil.
Building codes require foundations and water pipes to extend below the frostline to prevent frost heaving and burst pipes: In Minnesota, the frostline is four feet deep.
The depth varies by climate and soil conditions.
