frost fairs
Frozen river markets
Frost fairs were festivals held on frozen rivers, most famously the Thames in London during periods when it froze solid enough to bear crowds.
Vendors set up stalls, entertainers performed, and people walked or skated across the ice.
The Thames frost fairs ended in the early 1800s as winters warmed and the old London Bridge was replaced, allowing faster water flow that prevented freezing.
