friend of the family
Trusted family guest
A friend of the family is someone close to an entire household rather than just one member—a person who has known the family for years, attends gatherings, and is trusted by parents and children alike: He's been a friend of the family since before I was born.
The phrase sometimes appears euphemistically for a romantic partner or someone whose exact relationship is left diplomatically vague.
