frenum

Membrane that restricts

A frenum is a small fold of tissue that anchors or restrains a body part.

The most familiar are in the mouth—the lingual frenum connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth, and the labial frenum attaches the lip to the gum.

A short lingual frenum can restrict tongue movement, a condition called tongue-tie.

Also spelled frenulum, especially in anatomy.

Plural: frena or frenums.
