freewrites
Stream-of-consciousness exercises
Freewrites are informal writing exercises where you write continuously without stopping to edit or plan.
The practice, common in composition classes and among writers warming up, aims to bypass the inner critic and generate raw material.
You pick a topic or prompt and write for a set time—five, ten, twenty minutes—letting thoughts flow uncensored onto the page.
