free hit
No-dismissal delivery
A free hit is an uncontested play awarded after a foul in field hockey, where opponents must stand back while the ball is put in play.
The term extends to cricket, where a batsman cannot be dismissed on the delivery following a no-ball.
Figuratively, a free hit is any consequence-free opportunity: The first quarter was a free hit—nobody expected us to win.
