foreshorten

Make appear shorter

To foreshorten is to make something appear shorter than it actually is.

In visual art, foreshortening is a technique that depicts an object or figure angled toward the viewer, compressing its length to create the illusion of depth: The artist foreshortened the outstretched arm so it seemed to reach out of the canvas.

More broadly, to foreshorten is to reduce or truncate: The crisis foreshortened his political career.
