food miles
Produce travel measurement
Food miles is the distance food travels from where it's produced to where it's consumed, used as a measure of environmental impact.
The concept highlights that a tomato flown from another continent has a larger carbon footprint than one grown locally: I try to reduce food miles by shopping at the farmers market.
Critics note that transportation is only part of food's environmental cost—how it's grown often matters more.
