floor boards

Floorboards are the long wooden planks that form a floor's surface.

In older construction, floorboards were laid across joists and left exposed; modern floors often hide them beneath carpet or tile.

The spaces beneath floorboards—and the creaking sounds they make—figure in countless stories of hidden objects and midnight intruders.

In a vehicle, the floorboard is the bottom panel where passengers rest their feet.

Also spelled as one word: floorboard.
