first floors
Building entry levels
The first floor is the level of a building at or nearest ground level—but which floor that is depends on where you are.
In American usage, the first floor is the ground floor, the one you enter from the street.
In British usage, the first floor is one level up, above the ground floor.
This transatlantic difference causes regular confusion in hotels and apartment buildings: My flat is on the first floor means street level in New York but one flight up in London.
