fire breaks
Flame barrier zones
Fire breaks are gaps in vegetation or other combustible material, created to stop or slow the spread of wildfire.
They may be natural features like rivers or rocky terrain, or deliberately cleared strips of land: Crews cut fire breaks around the perimeter.
The term applies both to preventive barriers and those cut during active firefighting.
Also spelled as one word: firebreak.
