field sobriety
Curbside impairment check
Field sobriety refers to a person's state of not being impaired by alcohol or drugs while operating a vehicle on public roads.
The term appears almost exclusively in the phrase field sobriety test, a series of physical and cognitive tasks administered roadside by police officers to assess whether a driver is intoxicated.
These tests typically include walking heel-to-toe in a straight line, standing on one leg, and tracking a moving object with the eyes.
The officer asked him to step out of the car for a field sobriety test.
